Meas Sinath, now age 33, was injured 18 years ago while cleaning up her high school yard in Stung Trang District, Kompong Cham Province. A classmate and Sinath were cleaning up the school compound when her friend stepped on a mine and was instantly killed. The explosion left Sinath injured for life. She was taken to the hospital in Kompong Cham where her right leg was amputated, some fragmentation removed from her face and her eye socket, having lost the eye, was stitched. Her mother cared for her after she returned from the hospital. Sinath never returned to school.
Sinath did not relay the details of her past and was extremely nervous and uncomfortable during interviewing process.

What we do know about Sinath is that she married a young man many years ago. They live with her mother and are parents to three children, ages 5, 7, and 10. The two eldest go to school and the youngest stays at home with her mother while Sinath and her husband, also a UXO survivor (suffering from fragmentation in body, but no loss of limbs), attend the vocational training course. Sinath is extremely nervous around other people but her classmates say that she participating in the class and group well. Sinath and her husband do not live at the center with the other 28 students. With the help of her husband and a bicycle, they go home in the evenings to be with their children.
Before this training Sinath stayed at home.
She believes that she needs more medical care to address her chronic headaches, breathing and anxiety. She also deserves more medical attention and a chance for a better prosthesis.
With the support from CPI’s medical assessment, we plan to help her address these medical needs in addition to the socio/economic reintegration plan which the vocational training program addresses.
Sinath plans to use the start up grant to open a small tailor shop at her own home. She is not interested to work with others in a small cooperative.
